9 Steps to Success: Build Your Business Through Email Marketing

Marketing emails get opened more often than you think. Reports indicate that automated email messages average 70.5% higher open rates and 152% higher click-through rates than “business as usual” marketing messages (Epsilon Email Institute).

In fact, email marketing is 40 times more effective at acquiring new customers and has the highest ROI for any marketing tactic, with a whopping $38 for every dollar spent!

So, yes, clicking ‘Send’ could be the best thing for your business. And we’ll show you how with this handy guide.

9 emails every modern marketer should be sending:

1. Send the Welcome Wagon

A welcome email should be sent to new customers and subscribers, to thank them for coming aboard. We suggest inserting a few tips or messages across the email. At Original Ginger, we often put together an e-book or white paper, as an incentive, or ‘reward’ for subscription.

2. Start Spreading the News

Email newsletters keep your customers current, but they can also keep them curious. We recommend sending one out at least once a month if not more frequently, with a ratio of 3 to 1. You should be sending 3 value-add newsletters to every 1 promotional email. And don’t just offer a laundry list of news. Mash it up with varied media – videos, images, screenshots, guides and more.

3. Announce the Arrivals

Have a new product? Take advantage of your existing customer base and let them spread the word! An announcement email will let them know you have something new for them to try. Entice them with compelling images or screenshots (we recommend using high res photos that are sharp, clear and interesting). Drive people to your site, and there, you can place a call to action button or a link that helps them either purchase or subscribe. Hello sales!

4. Calling all Happy Customers!

Testimonial emails are an excellent way to promote your services or products, especially if you have satisfied customers. And a good review never hurt, right? Highlight the best quotes, include eye-popping images, and be sure to include a link to additional testimonials, case studies, and tutorials. Add in a case study video, or tips for success, and you’ll be sure to grab their attention!

Remember: Always secure the express approval from customers to use their quotes, feedback, and photos.

5. Helpful Hints

If you want your customers to maximize the use of your products and services, help them out with a ‘training’ email. Offer something that helps subscribers solve a problem, create videos, infographics, write a how-to guide, or find an expert for a Q&A column.

6. ‘Survey’ Your Kingdom

Surveys can be boring, but a simple, and artfully written one can be the perfect way to collect valuable customer information. Craft a survey that’s going to give you the data you need. Keep it short and mobile-friendly, as many will use their smartphones. And tell your customers why you need this information. They’re 10X more likely to fill it out.

7. Ready, Set, Re-up…

A Re-Up, or an advanced email to remind customers that it’s time to reorder or re-subscribe, will remind customers of your value and will ensure that products and/or services won’t go interrupted. Give dormant customers an offer that they wouldn’t normally receive and it gives them an extra incentive to come back to your site. And ditch the manual send-out. You can set this up as an automated campaign that goes out after your customer’s last purchase date.
